Bob Sheetz founded Sheetz in 1952 when he purchased one of his father’s five dairy stores located in Altoona, Pennsylvania. In 1961, Bob hired his brother Steve to work part-time at the store and eight years later, Steve joined Bob as a general manager. In 1972, the brothers doubled the size of the company, expanding from seven to fourteen stores. One year later, Sheetz added gasoline pumps and introduced self-serve gasoline to Central Pennsylvania.

By 1983, Bob and Steve had opened 100 stores. In 1995, Bob’s son Stan became the company’s president and lead the company through new periods of growth and innovation. Introducing Sheetz fans to touchscreen ordering, Sheetz Bros. Coffeez, Sheetz Made-To-Go (to name just a few) while redefining the concept of getting quality food at a convenience store.

One way Sheetz employees stay involved with their communities is through their corporate charity, Sheetz for Kidz.  This charity was created in 1992 by two Sheetz district managers looking for a new way to uphold the Sheetz tradition of giving. The first year, employees raised $12,000 and took 126 children holiday shopping for toys, clothes and other basic necessities. This is only the tip of the iceberg as far as the Sheetz for Kidz work goes! They also team up with Special Olympics, Make-A-Wish, The Salvation Army and Feeding America. Visit Sheetz website to learn more about their extensive charity work.

So much has changed in the 70+ years since Sheetz opened.  Life is faster and busier but one thing that hasn’t changed is Sheetz’ commitment to their customers, their employees, and the communities in which they operate.
