November Business of the Month-Sleepy Hollow Golf Club

If you think of Sleepy Hollow Golf Club as just a membership club for golfers, it’s time to readjust your thinking! Sleepy Hollow is so much more and wants you to benefit from all they have to offer. This prime location in the valley is also a wonderful venue for parties and is open to the public for this use.

But first, let’s go back 100 years or so to 1921 when Sleepy Hollow Golf Club first began; when a group of Nitro sportsmen decided to build what they called The Pocatalico Golf Links property.  In 1927, a lease on what is presently Ridenour Lake was obtained and the club was then re-chartered under the name Sleepy Hollow Golf Club. It became a popular attraction in the valley during the 1930’s, drawing a number of players from the Charleston area for league play.  In 1938, their lease ran out and the club acquired the same tract at Rock Branch where they had begun the old Pocatalico links some seventeen years earlier. The club flourished until World War II when many of the regulars were being called to service and others were working long hours in wartime industry, leaving little time for golf.  The course closed in 1942 and was practically abandoned until after the war in 1946, when a returning veteran collected a volunteer force to put the course back into playing condition. The club began to outgrow its facilities and since there was no room for expansion at Rock Branch, they wound up in a 280 acre tract on Poplar Fork in Teays Valley. The membership agreed to purchase the property and in 1955, completed the course and clubhouse and Sleepy Hollow was soon on its way to becoming one of the finest golf facilities in the state. By 1989 the club had once again outgrown its clubhouse facilities and plans were made to construct a new one and by July 1990, the snack bar and pro shop had moved into the new clubhouse and was doing business as usual with the rest of the operation to soon follow, which brings us back to present time.

Sleepy now serves over 450 members and their families with countless private parties, showers, and receptions its elegant dining rooms accommodate.  Sleepy’s large room is a perfect site for weddings and receptions and has plenty of room to accommodate 120 guests. The central location of Sleepy Hollow and ample parking make it a great choice for your next big event. Access to the balconies overlooking the golf course are included in the rental fee and believe us when we tell you, it’s a perfect view! They also have room rentals for smaller events. Not only does Sleepy do in-house catering, they can also cater for your off-site event you’re having elsewhere, such as Valley Park Conference Center.

In the future, Sleepy would like to continue to increase the amount of social events the community can enjoy. Expect a Breakfast With Santa event this coming holiday season that will be open to the public.  Watch the Sleepy Hollow Golf Club Facebook page for information on upcoming events.

Sleepy Hollow’s traditions are deeply rooted in its humble beginnings.  The teamwork of the membership throughout the years is evident in its continued growth.  The one common thread that has brought people of varying backgrounds together to work together to watch their club grow…

the love of the game.
