Roy and Norma Kuhl opened Roy Kuhl Sports in 1981. Rooted in Roy Kuhl’s strong lifetime love of baseball, the store was fully equipped with supplies and uniforms for youth and adults playing baseball, football, and other sports. In the early 1990’s, they decided to sell the business and move on to other ventures. The new owner declared bankruptcy a year later, and the sporting goods store was no more.
In 2010, two of Roy Kuhl’s sports loving daughters-in-law, Mary and Jennifer, who were both stay-at-home moms at the time, were sitting around Roy and Norma’s pool when Jennifer realized she were going to have to make a last minute run to either Charleston or Huntington to buy a throat guard for her son for baseball, and got the idea to re-open the store so people would have a convenient local option. In 2011 with the help of other family members, they took the plunge. Neither woman had any experience in running a retail shop, but after much prayer, they felt confident that this was to be part of their plan.
The store stocks equipment and supplies for tennis, basketball, wrestling, football, baseball, softball volleyball, and running, plus a few new ones such as disc golf. They also do uniform monogramming for team t-shirts. The original Roy Kuhl Sports prided themselves on customer service and Jennifer and Mary decided to take the same approach this second time around. They very much respect the success of their in-laws and have kept the store the same as much as possible.
Stop into this local Winfield gem for your sports needs and always expect service with a genuine smile!
