May Business of the Month-My Messy Desk

If you don’t have the pleasure of knowing Liz Giertz from My Messy Desk, you should stop in and check out her cozy space right off Main Street in Hurricane one day. She is such a wonderful and very creative lady we are blessed to have here in PutnamWV. We sat down with Liz to learn a little about her journey and what brought her to our neck of the woods and here’s what she had to say.

My Messy Desk started in my basement in Colorado when a friend showed me a picture in a popular home design catalog and asked if we could make something similar for her daughter’s room.  Soon after, a sweet group of ladies started coming to my house every couple weeks to learn some new craft techniques. When we moved to Louisiana, it wasn’t long before the moms I was crafting with started asking me to do classes with their kids.  Two years later, we moved to Texas and a whole new group of ladies gathered around folding tables in my dining room two or three times a month to create fabulous projects. With each move, God reinforced my passion to deepen the bonds with the women around my craft tables.

Even as early as 2010, I had a dream to have a brick-and-mortar arts and crafts studio, but as a military family who moved every couple of years, it just wasn’t practical. After our family moved to Hurricane in 2017, I met some ladies with a similar vision for building creatively.  In the fall of 2019, we opened a collaborative space called The Grove. Together we enjoyed using our passions to strengthen the community, but in the Spring of 2020, people suddenly stopped gathering.  The City of Hurricane was exceptionally supportive of my vision to strike out on my own.  I’ve now been operating My Messy Desk from the lower floor of 151 Dudding Avenue since August of 2020. I offer a weekly women’s Bible Study on Tuesday mornings, homeschool arts and crafts classes on Wednesday mornings and Thursday afternoons, toddler crafts on Thursday and Friday mornings, and a craft for school aged kids on Friday afternoons called Reward Crafts. In addition to these regularly scheduled classes, I also frequently host Ladies Craft Night, Crotchet 101, and open craft times. One of my favorite things is to offer a space for creatively themed birthday parties and private appointments for ladies in groups of 1-12 (or more if you have space I can travel to!)

I like to say that my space combines the inspiration of Pinterest with the supplies of Hobby Lobby; a place where I can make your creative dreams come true! Putnam County and the City of Hurricane are wonderful places to have a business because of the collaborative efforts of the leadership and other small business owners.
